What is the best way to hit a wave on a boat?
New to Boating! and i get kinda scared when i hit a wave on the river. what is the best way to hit a wave when im on the river so the boat does not capsize?
Probably will not get monster waves in a river but wake from large boats is a problem.
No real choice under sail but to head into the wave at an angle as mentioned moving into the direction the wave is coming from.
Same for smaller power boats exept you reduce power so you do not slam into it or go up and over & come down hard.
Fmr river sailor & have been badly bounced & hurt by iinconsiderate boaters.( mostly)
Have seen 25ft cruisers get tossed by larger boats.
Main thing is not to let the wave or wake hit you too far off the bow where it can cause a nasty roll.
Even on a river the combination of wind , wake or waves can get scary in a small or light boat.
When wake or wind blown waves come from the stern ( following seas )best to "surf" them at a slight angle so they do not swamp you by breaking over the transom.
The Coast Guard Auxiliary is the best place for instruction & literature on safe boat handling.
