Help writing a poem about my grandfather?
His 70th birthday is coming up, and I need some help writing a poem. Usually I'm pretty good at this, but I'm experiencing some "writer's block". I have some ideas down that describe him, so here they are:
-Boating “captain”, always gets us to the shores of safety
-Plays tennis
-Ice cream lover
-Ride bike in rain
-"Breakfast Club"
-Makes pancakes
-Attends my sporting events
-Orange hat
-Leader
-Farting jokes
-Funny jokes
-Three Stooges
-Plays Wiffleball/basketball
-Fast runner
-Plays ukulele
-Swims in Lake Skaneateles’ 50 degree water
-Water skiis
-Plays games: Word Sweep
Some of it may not make sense to those who don't know him...but all of this means something to me. To add another thing he's done, he was once the chancellor of Syracuse University. His name is Kenneth Allan Shaw ("Buzz").
My dear grandpa,
Turning 70 this year,
You still look the same,
As I always saw you,
Strong yet calm and fun!
Whenever we are in trouble,
You get there to save us,
You’re the captain of our lives,
Who leads us safely to the shore.
Strong as you are,
You’re equally healthy,
You play tennis so well,
It’s so hard to defeat you in a game!
How do you manage it?
You’re always so good at everything,
I wish I’d be like you,
When I age up a bit, like you!
You love ice cream,
You’re cooler than that!
You ride bike in the rain,
Felling the drops on your back!
You’re not only a great grandpa,
You’re a good cook, too,
You bake us pancakes,
That I love so much to eat!
You’ve got your breakfast events,
Never forget to attend my sports meet,
You’re the leader everywhere,
If it’s funny jokes or cookery.
You were that orange hat,
You play basketball and so many other games!
You’re just like that athletic,
Which reminds,
You’re a champ runner, too!
You can swim in cold water lake,
Can play pretty funny pranks,
You can also water ski,
There are juts so many things,
That I can mention about you,
And before I forget,
You’ve got a sharp mind, too,
That can play mind sweep and other mind games!
