If pfd and life jackets lose their buoyancy after a few years then shouldn't it be law to replace them?
Eg on public ferries and water parks like wild water kingdom. I think they're providing a false sense of security - we purchase our own for our kids because of this but it's a drag lugging them around.
The regulation is that PFDs and life jackets must be in good condition. They are tested at intervals, but if you are more comfortable taking your own for the kids, it's probably a good idea as most public ferries don't have kid-sized pfds. Not sure about water parks -- they should be commercially tested as well, and should have a better range of sizes, as they do cater to kids. But again, if you feel more comfortable knowing your kids have good pfds that fit well, then bravo! That's called good parenting, and it's too bad more people don't think the way you do.
PS: If you find it a drag lugging them around, Mustang has an inflatable jacket that folds up into what looks like a pair of suspenders, then inflates with a CO2 cartridge. You might find that more convenient to carry.
