Where can I find info on how to fix up old outboard boat motors?
I picked up a boat that had been stored for more than 10 years. Where do I find information on how to go through the motor before I start it up...if it will start. The motor is a West Bend Golden Shark 450...from the 60's or 70's. I am a big do-it-yourselfer and want to find out how to break the motor down, rebuild it, etc... Thanks.
A Golden Shark - nice classic motor. THE authority on antique outboards is the Antique Outboard Club at www.aomci.org - they have a free message board there. West Bend became Chrysler outboard which became Force. Previously West Bend bought Kissel out which used to supply outboards for Sears starting just before WWII. There's a good chance that motor is from the 1950s too.
If the motor turns over by hand it should be safe to try the starter. Before you do any of that, spray some wd40 or fogging oil into the cylinders - they're probably very dry. Then if it moves do a compression check on all the cylinders. If that's good, check out the carbs to see if they're gummed up and clean them. Once ok, and the tank is clean, fill it with 50:1 gas/oil (a good TCW3 2-stroke oil) and see if it fires up briefly. Possibly it needs 24:1 if it's from the 1950s - find a model# and post it at www.aomci.org.
You may need to check the lower unit oil and water pump impeller too before you try it on a boat.
