Gel Coat Sealant
Refinishing kitchen cabinet. What is process? 10 pts if you can answer all!?

Currently beautiful oak cabinets that previous owners applied a hideous whitewash pickle stain with some sort of very shiny, smooth sealant. They are shiny but some of the shiny stuff is peeling off. I have removed each one, taken off all hardware and cleaned with TSP.Now what?
Use chemical stripper and scrape, then sand left over spots
Do I prime them (I wish to use stain
Do I use a regular oil based stain? How many coats? What is a good brand? gel or liquid?
Sand between layers? I don't want distresseed or crackle.
How do I get that glossy, easily clean surface that was on the old ones?

I must have not gotten all of the old surface off before I started because the cowpoke I did had sticy stuff in some spots and other spots the new stain just didn't stay on and I would have a big blotch of the original ugliness.

Yes, you have to strip the finish and the stain out as best you can, then sand, sand sand, and then sand some more, you will tire of this fast. It is a nightmare. Get a little buzz sander to speed things up, get a roll of 120 sticky discs and slap them on the pad, peel them off an d slap on another one, get all you can wit the buzz sander, then get the tough spots by hand or with a block sander, when you theink you got it all, get some denatured alcohol, no, don't drink it, rub it on the door, it will show any flaw, glue, stain, etc, that you might have missed. Then you can stain, all wood is different, some stains don't like all wood, some stains are a lot better than others, if what you used didn't work, try another brand, get a small cam, pint, and try it, or take it to the paint store and let them rub it on for you, you will be amazed at the difference. Do not use the min-wax with urethane in it, It is the worst, we don't use it here in the shop. Get the right stain, one coat, rub it on thick and then polish right off. For the sealer, depending on what you use for a finish, we always use lacquer, but you might have to go with the urethane with a brush, so, get a can of sanding sealer, brush it on, let it dry, sand it off with either 150 paper, or sponge with sanding stuff stuck to it or the 3-m cloth sanding pads, they work great. Once that is done, you can take your finish , pour out a little in a can that will be thinned with mineral spirits, 1 to 1, brush it on, let dry, 3-m pad, then go with the urethane, full strength, brush it on, let dry, It might not need another coat or sanding, but I'll let you decide how thick to get it. You should be all set.
