What could happen if you put too much oil in a boat motor?
We know we did put too much in the motor but our friend (who is a avid boater) said no big deal just drive it and burn it off. Well, now the motor is locked down and it want start. We just bought the boat, we've only had it for one week. Could this have caused that to happen or did we buy a lemon?
The engine is a Mercury 125hp outboard, I know you don't have to mix oil and gas it does it it self. And the boat is a 97 Maxum 1900XR. I don't know about what noises it makes or don't makes, we were just told by our avid boater friend the motor locked down.
I'm with jtexas - what are we talking about? 4 stroke or 2 stroke?
I might respectfully suggest that your "avid boater" friend seems more enthusiastic than qualified. Overfilling a four stroke engine that is vertically mounted or otherwise is not wise. Oil is cheap compared to the engine, just drop and replace should an error occur. A half litre or so is nothing, but a gallon is way too much.
Take the boat to a quality workshop and get it fully serviced by trained professionals. Buy a workshop manual - which will pay for itself immediately in showing you how to run and care for your expensive engine.
