Can you make hard decisions?
Suppose this happened to you… what would you do?
Imagine you were out to sea on a boat by yourself, when suddenly during a horrific storm, your ship tilted over and took everything on it with it to the bottom of the sea - even the spare mini boat. Before the ship sank however, you had just enough time to put on your life raft, and grab one other object on your way out.
You could see an island in swimming distance which was completely deserted of humans, and the only things in reach of you was a bag filled with canned foods (maybe 1 weeks worth at best), a flare gun (with one shot in it), and a first aid kit (complete with few band aids, and a small number of medicines). You can only swim with ONE in hand.
From these three things, which one would you choose. Best answer gets 10 points Tell me why…
flare gun
with the flare gun you could gather a bunch of burnable 'stuff' from the island (twigs, leaves, anything that can burn) and build a really large "base fire" just shoot the flare into the dry burnable stuff. With the giant fire (also useful as a signal fire), you can find a large branch and transfer fire to another smaller pile of ignitable stuff to use as a fire pit for cooking (i'm not sure if there were any animals for hunting, but you could go Tom Hanks style and spear some fish and cook them with the fire). so the flare can pretty much be used to 'cancel' out the canned food. (Also what good is canned food without a can-opener?)
As for the first aid kit, if you suffered a flesh wound on the island you can use the fire that you set with the flare to cotterize(sp?) the wound. Wouldn't really help without the medicine, but all in all i would choose the flare gun.
of course this is only for me. I'm not too good at starting fires without matches or a lighter. If I were an Eagle Scout or something and could start a fire with two twigs, i might choose something else. but as of right now, i'm going with the flare gun.
