why are crests of waves white?
i recently sat beside the sea and watch deep blues waves land on the beach only to see the crests to be white, i also watch boats go through the water leaving white trails behind them, which then faded back to blue
The water turns white when a lot of air bubbles get mixed in. The presence of air bubbles causes the light to scatter, giving an appearance of whiteness.
You will note that the waves are blue until they start to break, when they break, the water mixes in with air, and the wave becomes more and more a roiling mix of water and air as the wave crashes down. Starts out as a whitecap, then becomes a white foaming mass.
EDIT : Don't listen to the guy that says water has no color. water is a naturally blue substance, just weakly so, so that in small amounts it appears transparent.
